The North's economy was mainly factories that got their raw materials from the south. They would take the cotton from the south and turn it into shirts or other products. They didn't depend on the slaves directly. They depended on the product the slaves were producing.

The South's economy was different from the North. They depended on slaves to make the product. The South needed Slaves way more than the North did. If slavery was abolished, they would have to pay their workers, which would really mess up their economy.
